Overview
If you were notified by ITS staff regarding an in-place upgrade of your PC from Windows 10 to Windows 11, please refer to this article as appropriate.
Windows 11 In-Place Upgrade Procedure
Important: Before Upgrading:
To ensure a successful upgrade, please follow these steps carefully:
- Connect to the campus wired network or docking station.
- The upgrade cannot be completed off-campus or over Wi-Fi.
- Your PC must remain connected to the campus wired network or docking station throughout the process.
- Ensure your computer is on AC power.
- Keep your laptop plugged in or docked until the upgrade is complete.
- Make sure your PC has at least 25GB of free disk space on C: drive
- To check disk space, type the command “Storage” in the Windows search bar. Then note the amount of free space on the C: drive
- Choose a convenient time.
- You can start the upgrade at any time this week that best fits your schedule. However, it should be done during the week when ITS staff are generally available. Allow 2 hours for the upgrade process to complete.
To Verify You Received the Upgrade Package
- In the Windows search bar, type Software Center and press Enter.
- In the left-hand menu, select Operating Systems. Look for Upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 entry.
- Click on Upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 to begin.
To Start the Upgrade
- In Software Center, click the Install button.
- A progress window will appear as the upgrade begins. Additional files will automatically download to your computer during this process.
- Do not log off your computer during the upgrade process.
Your computer may reboot several times. There may be times where you will see a blank, black screen and nothing may appear to be happening. Please do not power or or restart your PC. If after 3 hours the upgrade has not completed, please contact the TMSD at 389-2111.
