Copying/Downloading Contents of Email (Show Original)

Overview

The article addresses how to view and copy/download the original contents of an email messages in Google Mail including complete header information.  This may be useful for examining hoax/phishing emails or as directed by ITS support staff.  These instructions are for the Web version of Google Mail (Gmail) using a computer and browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc.  These instructions are not intended for mobile devices.

Instructions

Log in to your Gmail account. Locate the email message you wish to examine

1. Open the suspect email
2. On the right side next to the reply arrow there are three vertical dots (Kebab) menu. Click on it and select "Show Original".
3. There should be a link on the left side called "Download Original"
4. Find a good place to store the file temporarily
5. Return to your email send a message to the support staff as you normally would but also send as an attachment the file you saved in step 4.
